Communications Committee

Term of Members: 3 Years

 

The role of the committee is to work with the Township employees to inform the Berkeley Heights community about its local government, including Town Council priorities, redevelopment updates, public works progress and community-wide events. This committee supports the Township website, and other methods of communicating with residents such as email communications, newsletters and social media. They have a role in working with the Township administration in the continued development of the website as an effective communications tool. Members are sought who bring specific communication skills/background (details will be provided to those who express interest).

Downtown Beautification Committee

Term of Members: 3 Years

The beautification advisory committee assists in coordinating and integrating community plans and services for the downtown areas of the township, and performs such other duties as may be deemed necessary by the mayor and council. “Downtown area” means the area of the township designated as the downtown development zone district in the township’s municipal land use procedures ordinance and on the township’s zoning district map.

 

Meetings are held the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7:30 pm

 

Environmental Commission

Term of Members: 3 Years

The Environmental Commission reviews applications for development filed with the Planning Board and the Zoning Board of Adjustment and recommending steps to assure the preservation and protection of natural resources. It also has the responsibility to recommend policies and practices to the Township Council, the Planning Board and Board of Adjustment concerning environmental issues. The committee promotes environmental awareness and protection programs to the Berkeley Heights community and public schools.

 

Meeting information – generally held 1st and 3rd Mondays of every month

 

Memorial Park Renewal Committee

The Memorial Park Renewal Committee’s mission is to restore the Memorial to pristine condition. This mission continues with continued maintenance and enhancements to Memorial Park and projects honoring the veterans of Berkeley Heights. The committee has been incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, meaning that all gifts are tax-deductible.

Planning Board
The Planning Board makes and adopts a master plan for the physical development of the Township, reexamines the plan every six years, and acts as a consultant to the governing body and other local government agencies on potential projects covered by the Master Plan.

Meeting information – twice monthly

 

Zoning Board of Adjustments

The Zoning Board of Adjustment interprets the zoning laws. This board deals with the issuance of variances, which are based on the municipality’s zoning ordinance. The purpose of the Board of Adjustment is to provide relief from zoning requirements that cannot be satisfied. No member of the Zoning Board of Adjustment may hold any elective office or position under the municipality.

Board of Health

Term of Members:  3 years

A public health agency authorized by various New Jersey state statutes, responsible for the administration and enforcement of all health ordinances of the Township and for adopting rules, regulations, and ordinances designed to promote and protect the health, safety, and general welfare of the residents.

Meeting information – 3rd Wednesday of the month at 8:00 pm

Recreation Commission

Term of Members: 5 years

The Recreation Commission is responsible for maintaining public outdoor recreation facilities, including fields, playgrounds, tennis courts, and associated buildings.

 

Peppertown Park Committee

This advisory committee assists in coordinating and fundraising for the renewal, restoration and ongoing maintenance of the Township’s Peppertown Park, and to perform such other duties as may be deemed necessary by the Mayor and Council.

 

Library Board of Trustees

Term of Members: 3 years

Manages and governs the Township of Berkeley Heights free public library and to do all things necessary and proper for the maintenance of the library. Supports the growth of the library services to the community, advocate for excellence and adequate funding, devises a strategic plan, assesses the needs of the community and implement responses to those needs.
